The great protector of electrical installations against current leakage. Do you know what to do when the RCD doesn't stay on, even when we turn off the entire system using the main circuit breaker? This is a common situation that gives electricians a headache. Man, everything's turned off, why doesn't this thing stay on? The RCD doesn't STOP ON even when EVERYTHING IS OFF. How do you solve it? I'm dying and I don't know. Well, first of all, we must remember that the RCD is a device that trips in the event of a current leak. In other words, to use an analogy, it's as if the electric current were water flowing through a pipe and there was a hole in it. Therefore, some of this water doesn't go where it should, and you end up losing water, right? The RCD is a valve; it detects this leak and shuts it off automatically. Just like water leaks, energy can also leak—it's what we call a power leak, and this is very dangerous. A leak can happen for several reasons. The most common are insulation problems in electrical cables or problems with splices, especially in older electrical installations. Well, assuming there's a leak in a facility with a main circuit breaker, it won't stay on. You're called to inspect the facility, and when you get there, something unexpected happens. You turn off all the circuits, including the main circuit breaker, and just as you're about to reset the circuit breaker, it trips again, even with everything turned off. So, my dear, what are you going to do at this point? Are you going to sit around and cry? Are you going to replace the circuit breaker thinking it's broken? Or are you going to do like Zé Faísca, saying you don't need a circuit breaker because it trips all the time, and then remove the circuit breaker from the facility? Don't worry, my dear, we're going to perform the procedure I call ATR - Analyze, Test, and Resolve. But remember, to perform any test, unplug all equipment from the outlets, leaving only the lights on. After that, just follow these steps: STEP 1: Go to the distribution panel and turn off all the circuit breakers, including the RCD, but leave the main circuit breaker on. STEP 2: Turn the RCD back on only and notice that it won't stay on. Then, you turn the main circuit breaker off and try turning the RCD back on, but it still won't trip! Note: If the RCD stays on, the next step is to turn on the main circuit breaker and, consequently, the circuit breakers to determine which circuit is experiencing the current leak. In other words, the leak is likely in the phase cable of a circuit. But in our simulation, the DR doesn't stay on even with everything turned off, so we move on to... STEP 3: Keeping everything turned off, we'll disconnect only the neutral cable coming from the DR from the neutral bus and try to reconnect it. Lo and behold, the DR has tripped. Now we know there's a leak in the installation's neutral. "Neutral leak, André? What do you mean?" Calm down, my dear, let's continue our investigation so we can find the problem. The DR doesn't STOP ON even with EVERYTHING OFF. How do you FIX IT? Now you know!!! You were dying and didn't know it!
