Wrestling's Hottest Free Agent in 1994 Wasn't Who You'd Expect
Wronged Sports: / @wrongedsports The Touchback: / @thetouchback Hulk Hogan signed a lucrative contract with WCW on June 11, 1994 and was famously paraded around Disney-MGM studios. Make no mistake, he got himself a good deal. As did "Macho Man" Randy Savage later on in the year. But neither of them was the hottest free agent in wrestling at the time. There was only one name talked about every day, almost every hour…Tonya Harding. The former figure skater became the biggest heel in all of America after the Nancy Kerrigan injury and subsequent events and admissions, so why not make her the biggest heel in wrestling? Well, that was All Japan Women’s thought when they started this whole Tonya Harding in wrestling conversation, which takes a couple of weird turns. She never wrestles in Japan although contract talks span weeks. Once the AJW deal fell apart, a new group would come in. This was another non-US wrestling group, but it was one that had many Americans; it was AAA in Mexico, who had Art Barr “The American Love Machine”, who grew up in Oregon, like Harding, and knew her quite well. This would turn into another wrestling offer from Barr’s father, Sandy. But this is just the tip of the iceberg. Wrestling's hottest free agent in 1994 was Tonya Harding, and her short time as a wrestling manager gave the world some of the most amazing and confusing moments.
