Watergang viert 700 jaar en trapt af met feestelijke brunch

On Saturday, May 30, PIM headed to the De Nieuwe Boet community center in Watergang. The linear village is beautifully decorated with flags featuring Watergang's new coat of arms and colored ribbons. The occasion for this festive appearance is the 700th anniversary. Watergang belonged to Landsmeer until 1991, when the municipality of Waterland was formed, and both villages are now celebrating. About 600 people live in Watergang, and over 100 of them have registered for the brunch, which marks the opening of the festive week. Watergang is home to both people who have lived there their entire lives and those who have recently moved into the new Stierenveld neighborhood, and the two groups mix well. Ymke Hofhuis is one of the newer residents and is a co-organizer of the festive week, going over the program. It is wonderful to see that the new residents are also committed to activities, Mayor Marian van der Weele noted in her speech with which she officially opened the festive week. She also asked who was at the 650th anniversary celebration 50 years ago, and many hands went up. With a toast of bubbly, people went to brunch. Soup, sandwiches, waffles, salads—it all looked delicious. Trio Vleppyie Auwels provided the musical backdrop. The weather also cooperated, allowing everyone to enjoy being outside together. A scavenger hunt had also been set up for young and old, Ymke Hofhuis explained. There is a photo exhibition in the church, and here we spoke to Frans Stokkel. Frans has written a historical book about Watergang, and this exhibition is on display all week.
