ENHANCE your WOOD GRAIN! (new EASY technique!!!)
I found a new easy technique for highlighting the wood grain of your guitar body! (or any wood project for that matter). The key to this technique is to 1) use open grained wood. For guitars, that means ash, mahogany, paulownia, etc (I'm sure there is more I missed). 2) sand your wood REALLY well, up to 400 grit if you can. 3) use a wax finish on top of your stain to fill the grain, and remove it from the wood surface with teak oil. Then spray/rub on your oil based clear coat and you're done! watch the video that inspired me to try this here: • Finishing Secrets - Coloring with Wax 2 of 2 Here are the products I used in this video: *Prices mentioned in this video are subject to change without notice. For this particular project, black stain with metallic silver grain: Minwax true black stain: https://amzn.to/2TpcVjM Rub n buff metallic wax finish (silver leaf color): https://amzn.to/2CbeUgZ (it’s about half this price in your local craft shop) teak oil (for removing the top layer of wax): https://amzn.to/2u5IYWV To do a darker wood grain on a light stain use kiwi shoe polish as your wax finish: https://amzn.to/2TrSrH4 Here is the scrap wood I used to practice different colors and finishes: https://amzn.to/2TsT5DY This is the guitar kit I’m building from guitar fetish, which is a great place to buy guitar bodies made of paulownia to use for this technique (Guitar Fetish is NOT an affiliate): https://www.guitarfetish.com/Super-Li... just the body here: https://www.guitarfetish.com/Lightwei... If you're looking for a cheap good first diy guitar kit, check this one out: http://shrsl.com/1jivm (please note that this kit is basswood so this grain filling technique will not work on it) Full disclosure: I am an Amazon Associate, and the links in this description are affiliate links, which means that if you make a purchase, it doesn't cost you any more money, but I will earn a commission.
