I'm Enric, your philosophy teacher on YouTube, and this is Addicted to Philosophy. Can we reach God through reason? This is the central question of that branch of philosophy known as natural theology or philosophical theology. And what is almost one of the first texts one reads when one wants to delve into the philosophical question of whether God exists? Indeed, Article 3 of the second question of the first part of the Summa Theologica, where Thomas Aquinas presents his famous five ways to demonstrate the existence of God. What are the five ways to the existence of God? (1) The way of motion, (2) the way of causality, (3) the way of contingency, (4) the way of degrees of perfection, and (5) the way of finality. They are perhaps the most famous proofs of the existence of God, and anyone who compiles a list of the most relevant theistic arguments in the history of philosophy will have to include them. But... have you ever been told that the WORST thing you can do if you want to fully understand the Ways is to read them directly from the Summa Theologica? Yes, because it turns out the Five Ways have a serious problem: they are summaries. They are mere outlines of arguments that Saint Thomas presents in greater detail elsewhere and that depend on key concepts taken from Plato and Aristotle (such as act and potency, or natural finality, or participation) that are taken for granted in the text of the Summa. Therefore, to truly understand the Five Ways, one needs some prior knowledge of Thomistic philosophy, and it's not enough to simply read the brief text in which Thomas enunciates them. But that's what most people do: read the Ways disconnected from the rest of Thomas's thought, and not infrequently even from their context within the Summa. This, in turn, means that most of the times the 5 Ways are explained (also on YouTube), the result is quite poor: textbook errors are repeated and misunderstandings and confusions arise due to a lack of awareness of the underlying metaphysical reasoning (see Richard Dawkins's "refutations" in "The God Delusion"). What I propose in this video is to remedy this situation. I want to offer you a detailed introduction to both the general structure of the 5 Ways and to each of them individually, so that you are prepared to continue investigating on your own. We will look at the two most common mistakes made when approaching the Ways and the theses of natural philosophy that come into play in each one. The 5 Ways represent the culmination of Thomas's philosophy, the different reasonings or paths with which Aquinas seeks to reach, through reason alone, the unique, unconditioned, and absolute principle of all that is. Consequently, they deserve to be taken with a little more attention and seriousness. If we end up concluding that they don't work, let's at least be sure we're rejecting ALL 5 Ways, and not a caricature of them that even Thomas Aquinas would have thrown in the trash. So...
