Canadian Pacific Railway: History of a Design

Canadian Pacific Railway, much like its neighbor Canadian National Railway, has gone through quite a few changes in its longstanding 140 year history. Canadian Pacific began its story after completing its transcontinental route across the still developing nation. After its completion in 1886, a logo was needed that would catch people's attention on timetables. This would result in a shield design, with a beaver being added later on. However, the Victorian-era style of it could only last so long, and CPR found itself creating many new designs to keep up with the times. Whether it be the beaver and shield design, Multimark, a Helvetica wordmark, or Canadian Pacific's current return to form beaver and shield and modern typeface logo, I'll be discussing the evolution of Canadian Pacific's graphic design.
