Additional Insights: Hearing God's Voice in an Age of Artificial Intelligence

Happily ever after is an enduring archetype of deep human hope. It is not coincidence that our enduring human repositories of hope and belief—what we call fairy tales—end happily ever after. In contrast, this world often feels unhappy and fleeting, superficial and noisy, pushy and uncaring. We can be consumed by planned obsolescence, 24/7 news cycles, the never-ending quest for the next big thing. Yet, the more change and artificiality we face, the more we seek lasting, authentic relationships. We want deep belonging that lasts. Therefore, it is critical we all help set the boundaries and define AI’s moral compass. Profit-driven technology companies should not be left alone to determine the ethical and moral dimensions of AI. We need to work together with care and caution to forestall unforeseen and unintended AI consequences. We are concerned for what AI means in the realms of faith, ethics, and human dignity. We want AI to promote human flourishing, encourage fair and shared prosperity, and advance the common good. With faith, civic, and technology leaders, we are working to define ethical and responsible AI in trust, alignment, accountability, privacy, data governance, transparency, explainability, security, safety, and socio-economic-cultural equity. Of course, I am not saying AI is inherently bad or should be avoided—but nor am I suggesting AI is always good. Like other tools, AI can bless or harm depending on how we choose to use it. Please let wise use of AI deepen, not diminish, your relationship with God (Thou), self (I), each other (They), and natural environment (It).
