Today we're taking you for a train ride aboard La Trochita, also known as the Old Patagonian Express. This was one of our favorite excursions during our visit to Esquel! There are several trips you can take on this train, but we traveled from Esquel to Nahuel Pan. La Trochita gets its name from its narrow-gauge, 75-centimeter-wide railway. This railway line was planned as part of a rail network across southern Argentina, but the project was never completed due to a change of government and the outbreak of World War I, which severely impacted the Argentine economy. To run these narrow-gauge tracks, two brands of steam locomotives were purchased: Baldwins from the United States and Henschels from Germany. The train's cars, on the other hand, are of Belgian origin and were later equipped with salamanders to make the journey through Patagonia during the colder months. Today, the line has become a tourist attraction, and short-distance train rides are available. This narrow-gauge train (only 75 cm wide) was originally intended to connect all of southern Argentina, but the project was halted due to changes in government and World War I. Today, it is one of Patagonia's most iconic tourist attractions. 🎟️ Tickets, Prices, and Schedule Ride price: 1,260 Argentine pesos per person (~32 USD). Schedule: Departs at 10:00 AM, but it's recommended to arrive 30 minutes early. Duration: Approximately one hour to Nahuelpán Station, where stops are made to visit fairs and museums, and then one hour back to Esquel. Tip: The station is close to downtown Esquel, making it easy to walk if you're staying in the city. Tours can also be arranged from places like Bariloche and other points in Patagonia. 🚂 The Experience of Riding La Trochita The trip begins with the excitement of watching the steam locomotive preparing, releasing steam and whistling before departure. The Belgian-made cars are equipped with salamanders to warm the train during the harsh Patagonian winter. There are different seating options: first class with comfortable leather armchairs, and second class (where we traveled) with authentic wooden benches, perfect for an hour's journey. 🍽️ Food Stop and Artisan Fair Upon arrival at Nahuelpán station, there are about 45 minutes to explore. Samuel focuses on the local cuisine: he lines up to buy choripán loaded with chimichurri, crispy torta frita, and artisanal alfajores (galesa cake, dulce de leche with raisins, and more). The atmosphere is ideal for sipping coffee and taking home sweet souvenirs. Even the station dog joins in, waiting for a bite! 🏺 Patagonian Culture and Museum In addition to the fair, there is a Museum of Patagonian Native Cultures where you can learn more about the Tehuelche and Mapuche peoples. Time is limited due to all the eating, but it's enough to explore several rooms full of local history and tradition. 🏞️ Panoramic Views and Tour Details During the journey, you'll enjoy unique landscapes: mountains, valleys, and all the charm of the Patagonian steppe. The best views are on the right side as you leave Esquel. The train has salamanders for the cold, adding a rustic and cozy touch to the trip. 🎶 Music, Songs, and a Good Atmosphere The return journey is lively: guitar music, songs, and a festive atmosphere among passengers, as the train resumes its journey toward Esquel. The experience is not only visual and gastronomic, but also social and cultural. 📝 Useful Information and Final Tips The most popular tourist route is Esquel–Nahuelpán, but there are also options from El Maitén or Ingeniero Jacobacci. In Esquel, the train departs every Saturday, year-round. Tip: Don't miss the choripán with chimichurri and the Welsh cake alfajores!
