【圧巻の美街】ジュネーブぶらり散歩!【スイス #7】
"This is Geneva," was the feeling I got from my stroll through Geneva! Although I only had a short time, I was able to stroll around the city. Please take a look! Please check it out after watching the video. Unfortunately, the weather was overcast throughout the day, but it's easy to imagine how beautiful and comfortable the city would have been if it had been sunny. We visited in June, which is a rainy season in Switzerland, so we were lucky that it wasn't raining. Depending on the device you're viewing the video on, this beautiful city may appear very dark... We've made some color adjustments, but there are limits to the expedition's knowledge and technology... I apologize. I seem to remember learning about Jean-Jacques Rousseau in world history or ethics classes in high school, but I had no idea he was from Geneva. His time was a time of turmoil for all of Europe, including Geneva. Geneva was an independent country known as the Republic of Geneva, a French colony, or a Swiss colony, and its hegemony changed frequently amid sectarian conflicts between Christian denominations. Reading Rousseau's Wikipedia page, I was surprised to see that he often had unusual relationships with older women, and that the word "masochism" was associated with it. There are two statues of women in the Jardin Anglais (English Garden - French is tricky). Apparently they were installed in 1864, making them as old as the Hotel de la Paix (now the Ritz-Carlton). Helvetia, the woman on the right, also known as the "Mother of Switzerland," is often considered a symbol of the Swiss nation itself, and is so popular that her image can even be seen on current Swiss coins and banknotes. Meanwhile, the statue on the left, representing the Republic of Geneva, is also a woman (why a woman? It's unclear), and for some reason, both are armed. Similar bronze statues in Japan include the statue of Saigo Takamori in Ueno, the statue of Sakamoto Ryoma, and the statue of Takeda Shingen in front of Kofu Station, all of which depict men who led their countries at the time. It makes you wonder whether women have been leading the people in Switzerland for hundreds of years, but I felt these statues were perfectly suited to our current era, which unintentionally values female leaders. Our expedition team gets excited when we find Bibles in hotels around the world (we don't believe in any particular religion, lol), but we also often feel a "wow" when we see churches and mosques. It goes without saying that Christianity has historically been an inseparable part of Europe, but I've read that one way to make people feel the presence of God is to instill a sense of awe in them through huge structures. The sense of fear/awe we felt at Saint-Pierre Cathedral was exactly that, and it's similar to the terrifying Celestials, the giant planet-sized gods that appear in Marvel films! The Giant God Warriors that appear in Studio Ghibli and Hideaki Anno's works are similar, too. It's interesting that even though they feel so real and even connect to faith, they are ultimately fictional works created by humans. When I looked up the "scary house" we saw at the end of the merry-go-round on Google Maps, it was listed as the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Geneva. Evangelical...something like an evangelical, Lutheran church. By the way, the cool orange car parked right in front of it was a Lamborghini, also known as Guinni! Why is there a Lamborghini in front of a church?! Geneva's old town is full of mysteries. Thank you for watching again! ★☆★We look forward to your comments! ★☆★ #Geneva #LakeLéman #Léman #Switzerland #SaintPierreCathedral #un #UnitedNations #UNSecretariat #geneva #swiss #switzerland #swissairline #zurich #grindelwalt
