Although the most popular of all the resorts that Greece, Crete, is famous for, Ierapetra, the fourth largest city on the island, is not as well known among Russian tourists as other settlements on Crete. Meanwhile, Ierapetra is the southernmost city in Europe, but the Greeks themselves prefer to vacation there. Nevertheless, in terms of infrastructure, the town is not much inferior to other popular resorts on the island. As for the sights of Ierapetra, first of all, this is the Venetian fortress in the port and the archaeological museum, the pearl of the collection of which is the statue of Persephone. The bad news is that both of these sites are open until 15:00, the good news is that the entrance to the museum is only 2 euros, and the fortress is completely free. Among other sights of Ierapetra, I will highlight the former Ottoman mosque, which now houses a gallery of modern art. The beaches of Ierapetra are sandy and rocky, but the Libyan Sea is relatively calm compared to the Aegean. The thing is that the wind blows not from the sea, but from the mountains. Of course, the town is inferior to a number of settlements on the island in terms of beaches and attractions. Nevertheless, it also contributes to the popularity of the island of Crete.
