Whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, soda and salt. Rub in the butter until the mixture looks like wet sand. Whisk the egg into the buttermilk, and then pour this into the flour mixture. Mix together into dough, and form into a flat disk. Place the disk onto a baking sheet and cut into 8. Brush with an egg wash if desired. Bake 30 minutes.
