One of the goals of the Eletricity channel is to bring information and knowledge to subscribers. If you follow the channel and watch our videos, you are already able to diagnose some defects. The proposed exercise was created by Kurt Meister, administrator of the Facebook group Electricity, Theory in Practice. We have a transformer and a 220V electrical circuit with a 30mA RCD (Residual Current Device) supplying a resistive load. Accidentally, one of the load's power cables makes contact with ground. The 1kΩ resistor simulates, for example, an insulation fault and not a direct contact. Under these conditions, does the RCD trip or not? In videos on this channel, you've probably seen that a 30mA RCD cannot trip for currents below 50% of its nominal value, i.e., 15mA; it can trip for currents above 50%, i.e., 15mA or more; and it must trip instantly for currents of 30mA or more. Let's analyze the leakage current value to determine if the RCD trips or not. If we have 220V across the load, between the leakage point and ground, we have 127V across a 1kΩ resistor, giving us a value of 0.127A or 127mA, which would cause the RCD to trip correctly? No, this type of analysis is completely wrong. If you look more closely, you'll notice that the load is not being powered directly by the mains, but by an isolation transformer, and there is no grounding at any point on the secondary side. Therefore, we have a completely isolated system, and thus there is no potential difference between one of the load poles and the ground. We've already shown this in detail in a video on this channel ( • IDR DESARMOU E PERDI TUDO QUE TINHA NO FRE... ). Therefore, the correct answer is: The RCD does not trip for the suggested leakage, even if it were a direct contact without the 1kΩ resistor. Did you like the challenge?
