Summit camping in the Lake District, a WILD and WINDY night!
Join me on my first summit camp in over 7 weeks, with getting used to my new medication, and a couple of named storms rolling through the Lake District I haven't been able to get out in the mountains. Now I'm used to injecting myself and the post injection pain has lessened it was time to head back out into my happy place. On this occasion I park up in Glenridding where I meet up with / @peter-lindsay Small feet Pete won my recent competition, so we both decided it was a great opportunity to finally meet up. We walked up the valley with Glenridding Dodd and Sheffield pike to our right, and out into the fells. The fog was thick on the tops, and as we ascended the wind became bitterly cold, views were hampered by the fog, but were still beautiful, The Lake District has its Autumnal coat on with reds, coppers and browns on display. Initially we had only 1 summit planned to see how my medication and time off affected me, but I was fine, so we tagged a very hazy White Side before heading over to Raise, where the wind really had picked up, and was at the 40mph mark, we dropped just off the summit to get some respite, and found a great spot to pitch both our tents. Setting up just below the heavy fog layer, we had views over Ullswater and Bassenthwaite, all be it misty. Settling in for the night we eat our food, and discuss each other's setups, as well as some camping tips before going to sleep. The wind was strong all night, and we both woke early for coffee and breakfast before packing up and taking a different route back down. This route took us past the ski hut and slopes in the pitch dark, as we descended further towards the old mine, dawn broke and we got some delicate sunrise colours as we approached the cars, where I gave Pete his prizes before heading off home.
