The Thane Circular Metro Project is a major infrastructure initiative designed to improve public transport and ease traffic congestion in Thane, Maharashtra. Approved by the Union Cabinet in August 2024, this ambitious rapid transit project will create a 29-kilometer circular metro line that will encircle the city, providing seamless connectivity across key locations. The project will include 22 stations, 20 of which will be elevated and 2 underground, making it one of the most significant metro developments in the region. The metro line will connect vital areas such as Thane Junction, Shivaji Nagar, and Manpada, and it will link with Mumbai Metro's Green Line (Line 4) at Raila Devi station and the Orange Line (Line 5) at Balkum Naka station, ensuring smoother interconnectivity for commuters traveling between Thane and Mumbai. With an estimated cost of ₹12,200 crore, the project will be funded equally by the Government of India and the Maharashtra State Government, with additional funds sourced from bilateral agencies, asset monetization, and corporate partnerships. Geotechnical investigations have already begun, and the project is in the design phase, with completion expected by 2029 and operations starting soon after. The Thane Circular Metro will play a crucial role in enhancing the urban landscape, promoting sustainable transportation, and significantly reducing traffic congestion.
