The ins, the outs and the inside-outs of VW Cam Seals by Dieselgeek

Tyler takes a closer look at 3 different types of VW cam seals and dives into the steps that should me taken before installing them. Step one: DONT REPLACE YOUR CAM (or crank) SEAL UNLESS ITS LEAKING. The late common rail cam seal is the 'inside out' version VAG# 03L103085. The installer cone we use in the video is the one that comes with the Victor Reinz brand 'right side out' PTFE version of the seal VAG pn 038103085C. The 038103085C seal was used from 2001-2011ish production and can be used in place of the later 03L103085 seal without issue. The extractor is VAG tool 3240. The press-piece is 3240/1. The installer cup is 3265 to which we added an M12x1.5 bolt and a rubber grommet to keep it concentric.  PD and Common Rail engines will require VAG tool T10051 to counter-hold the center bolt. The CR hub will just slide off the cam nose while the PD will require puller T10052. Our version of T10051 is tagged above and available for purchase on our website www.dieselgeek.com. The PTFE front crank seal is 038103085E, applicable to all 4 cyc TDI cranks 1999.5 - 2014. Extractor 3203. Installer cup & cone T10053. The crank sprocket will need to be removed for access. Counter-hold the sprocket using 3415 or alternative (MNKICK-4CYL). The M16 center bolt must be replaced during reassembly. ALH & CKRA use the 54mm bolt WHT005322 PD & CBEA/CJAA use the 59mm bolt WHT004573. The cam tools and PTFE seal may be used for the crank nose of early AHU/1Z TDI. These use a 32mm diameter seal for the cam, crank, and intermediate shafts. The M14 center bolt must be replaced during reassembly N90577101; torque to 66ftlbs + 90* There is a lot of overlap with gas applications as well. Consult the factory parts fiche to specific numbers, but the procedure is largely identical.
