A ride on the Southend Pier Railway a mile out into the Thames estuary

After going to Shoeburyness, the day was so lovely, I took a walk along the waterfront all the way back to Southend. As you approach, the view is dominated by the pier and, well, after walking so far it would be rude not to partake in a little ride out along the pier railway. I'm not really one for seaside piers, but this one really is wonderful. The views from the train and especially the feeling of being right out in the Thames Estuary at the pier head (over a mile from the shore) is something quite special. There have been new battery-electric trains delivered to the railway, but they have suffered teething problems which means they are often replaced by the old diesel train that dates from the 1980s. And this was the case today. But nothing was going to spoil the views!
