We Never Expected This in the 5 Years of Rescuing Horses. Foals, Loss, New Rescues & an Orphan Foal
Episode 149 After five years of rescuing horses from slaughter, this year threw us something we never expected...pregnant mares! At Big Hoof Foundation, our mission has always been to save senior horses with medical conditions, the ones most overlooked and closest to the end of the line. Foals were never part of the plan. But this year, life had other ideas, and we found ourselves welcoming five new babies into the sanctuary, all while continuing to pull horses off slaughter shipments. To say it's been a whirlwind is an understatement. Caring for newborn foals is a completely different world from what we know. Our hands and hearts are full learning as we go, while making sure our senior rescues continue to get the love and medical care they need. We also want to share something that has been heavy on our hearts, one of our mares unexpectedly passed away from colic, leaving behind a foal we are now hand-raising as an orphan. It has been heartbreaking and beautiful all at once, and we are doing everything we can to give this little one the best possible start at life. We are so sorry for the lack of videos. We have missed you all and we are grateful beyond words for your patience and continued support. There is so much to catch you up on, and we can't wait to share every moment with you. Thank you for being part of this journey. Every like, comment, and subscription helps more people find these horses and donkeys and that means everything to us. Nutrition is at the heart of rehabilitation, and keeping this herd properly fed is one of our greatest ongoing needs. To put it in perspective, a single draft horse can eat 20–30 lbs of hay per day. Multiply that across hundreds of animals, and the numbers add up fast: 🔹 16 round bales every 3 days 🔹 $160 per bale Every sponsored bale means a horse or donkey not just surviving but truly thriving. 🎬 Join Our Patreon Community Want to go deeper behind the scenes?
