In this video, we will explore the music of India (Music in India – Part 1). We will begin with the Vedic period, where the Samaveda is considered the foundation of Indian music. We will then explain the basic concepts of Indian music—swara, shruti, raga, tala, rasa, thaat, and time—in simple terms. We will further explore the classification of Indian music (classical, folk, and modern music) and the history, characteristics, major gharanas, and great musicians of Hindustani and Carnatic classical music, such as Tansen, Tyagaraja, Muthuswami Dikshitar, and Shyama Shastri. We will also explore the characteristics of India's major folk music traditions—Bihu, Pandavani, Rasiya, Mando, Bhajan, Shabad, Qawwali, and Rabindra Sangeet—in detail. Finally, we will analyze the development of modern Indian music, indi-pop, rock, jazz, and Bollywood music.
