Taking cuttings is really easy. All I do first, is make a cut below one of the leaf nodes. ... If too much bacteria grows in the water, the zinnia stems will quickly turn to mush and rot away. If done properly, they'll start growing roots. Can you take cuttings from zinnias? Cut the stem into sections with minimum 2-3 buds. Strip leaves from bottom buds and leave some leaves on the cutting. Root in well draining soil. A tall zinnia plant can produce 6-8 cuttings. Should you pinch out zinnias?
