Sovereign State Faridkot Empire | World Politics | States of Panjab Maharaja Harinder Singh Brar of Faridkot (1915-1989) was the last ruler of the princely state of Faridkot in Punjab, India. He ascended the throne in 1934 after the death of his father, Maharaja Brij Inder Singh. Harinder Singh was known for his regal lifestyle, progressive vision, and his significant contributions to the state's development. However, he is also remembered for his controversial political stance in the mid-20th century when he expressed a desire to make Faridkot a separate nation from India. In the wake of India's independence in 1947, many princely states were faced with the decision to join either India or Pakistan. Maharaja Harinder Singh initially resisted the idea of merging with India. He envisioned Faridkot as an independent nation, separate from the newly formed Republic of India. His stance was influenced by his belief in the sovereignty of his princely state and a desire to maintain control over his domain. This desire was partly fueled by the uncertainty faced by many royal families as they lost their traditional powers and privileges during the political reorganization of the subcontinent. Despite his initial opposition, Faridkot was eventually merged into the Indian Union in 1948, along with many other princely states. Maharaja Harinder Singh's dream of an independent Faridkot remained unfulfilled. After the merger, he held no official power but continued to live a life of luxury.
