The only practice transmitted from the Prophet ﷺ and his companions is fasting. The Principle of Rejected Actions: The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever does an action that is not from our command, it is rejected." Any act of worship not legislated by the Prophet ﷺ is not accepted, no matter how well-intentioned. The Salaf's Principle: All paths to Allah are closed except the path of the Prophet ﷺ. You cannot know if Allah is pleased with an action unless the Prophet ﷺ legislated it. Do Not Make Up a Missed Ashura: If you miss fasting Ashura, do not make it up later in the year. The Prophet ﷺ never did this, nor did his companions, nor the Salaf. This would be an innovation. If you miss it, wait for the next year. The Reward of Teaching Others: The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever guides to good has the reward of the one who does it." If you teach someone about fasting Ashura and they fast, you get their reward without it being reduced from them. Convey this knowledge to your family and community. The Rulings of Fasting Ashura: The fast of Ashura is like any other voluntary fast, except it is not obligatory. It is incorrect to fast believing it is obligatory – you should fast believing it is highly recommended (mustahabb). Why Muharram Is the First Month: Umar, Uthman, and Ali (RA) agreed to make Muharram the first month of the Islamic calendar. This was the decision of the Sahaba. Ibn Hajar said: "It was called Shahrullah al-Muharram because you begin your year with staying away from haram, and you end your year with Hajj (where sins are cleansed)." Combining Intentions (Tadakhul al-Niyyah): If Ashura falls on a Friday or Saturday, you can combine the intention of fasting the Sunnah of Friday/Saturday with the intention of fasting Ashura – as long as both are voluntary. This is permissible. A Scholarly Note on Fasting Saturday: There is a difference of opinion on fasting Saturday alone. The strongest approach reconciles the hadiths: fasting Saturday is permissible, especially if combined with another day (like Ashura or the day before/after).
