Two electrocuted during frantic escape after high-tension line falls outside Balandra home

Two relatives are hospitalised after being electrocuted during a frightening early-morning incident involving a high-tension power line at a home in Rampanalgas Village, Balandra. The incident occurred around 4:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 11, 2026, when residents were jolted awake by a loud explosion followed by a bright flash of light. According to a 45-year-old woman, she and her family initially believed a fire had broken out after hearing the loud noise and seeing sparks and smoke near their home. Fearing for their safety, the occupants immediately began evacuating the property. However, during the evacuation, 20-year-old Jesus Maharaj came into contact with a high-tension power line that had fallen into the yard and was electrocuted. Moments later, Adrian Lewis, 37, attempted to render assistance but was also electrocuted. Both injured men were rushed to the Toco Health Centre, where they received emergency medical treatment before being transferred to the Sangre Grande Hospital for further evaluation. Police and T&TEC emergency crews responded and initiated investigations.
