Poland’s 1000 Lakes: The Perfect Weekend Road Trip!

Hey hey! Two friends and I rented a car in Warsaw and drove north into a region most international travelers never reach. Mazury, poetically called the Land of a Thousand Lakes, though there are actually over two thousand of them scattered across northeastern Poland. This is where Polish families spend their summers, where sailboats outnumber cars, and where I found some of the cleanest, most peaceful water I have ever swum in. WHAT IS IN THIS VLOG: 00:00 Intro 01:00 Driving from Warsaw to Olsztyn, our first stop for the night 02:00 Exploring Olsztyn at night: little houses, live music bars and the main plaza 03:00 Dinner and my first taste of pierogi, the variety here is endless 04:00 Cherry wine at a local bar: sweet, strong for my friends, basically juice for me 05:00 Morning in Olsztyn: finding the Copernicus statue and the Gothic castle where he actually lived 06:00 Learning that Copernicus, the man who said the sun is the center of the universe, was Polish and lived right here 07:00 Breakfast and hitting the road toward our first lake 08:00 Jumping straight into the first lake because it was simply too beautiful not to 09:00 Lunch stop for wild boar, a completely new flavor for me and one I will let you judge for yourself 10:30 Arriving in Mrągowo: a small lake surrounded by cafes and restaurants 11:30 Finding the much bigger lake nearby, passing a statue of Pope John Paul II along the way 12:30 Sailboats everywhere: why this region is considered Poland's sailing capital 13:00 The small statues scattered around Mrągowo worth spotting 14:00 A protected lake we found further into the wild countryside, full of little rowboats 15:00 A stop at Żabka, the Polish convenience store chain, for ice cream 15:30 Our final lake of the day: walkable in full in just a few minutes and unbelievably clean 16:30 Arriving in Giżycko for the night 17:00 Exploring the town: boat statues, a pirate ship replica and sunset over Lake Niegocin 18:15 Dinner with live Polish music, dancing, beer and ribs 17:10 Ending the night in a jacuzzi with friends 17:17 Morning at another lake with campers and tents set up nearby 18:21 A short drive to a completely wild lake deep in the forest 19:00 An honest note about the disposable grills and trash we found there, and why taking care of this place matters 19:10 Final thoughts on a region with more lakes than one weekend could ever cover MAZURY: THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW Mazury, officially the Masurian Lake District, contains over 2000 lakes connected by canals and rivers across northeastern Poland. It is nicknamed the Green Lungs of Poland due to its dense forests and clean air. Olsztyn, the regional capital, has a 14th century Gothic castle where Nicolaus Copernicus lived and worked between 1516 and 1521, and it was here that he wrote the first two chapters of his revolutionary work on the sun centered universe. Giżycko sits between Lake Niegocin and Lake Kisajno and is considered the sailing capital of the region, home to a manually operated swing bridge and the 19th century Boyen Fortress. ROOKIE MISTAKE: Thinking one weekend is enough. It is genuinely not. This region has thousands of lakes and we barely scratched the surface. Come back with more days if you can. A REQUEST FROM ME: This place is stunning because people have taken care of it. Please be a good tourist and a good local. Do not leave trash behind. If you love a place, protect it so it stays this way. NEXT VIDEO: Back in Warsaw for a free walking tour with a lot of useful information about the city. Do not miss it.
