The Last Minute Scrapping Crunch: Trip Prep!

Video Description: Hudson’s Hope to the South – The Big Scrap Haul & Road Trip Prep The Pre-Trip Crunch It’s been a whirlwind of a week here in Hudson's Hope, British Columbia. Between the professional equipment operator duties and the unpredictable weather—snowstorms followed by freezing rain—getting the car loaded for this trip has been a challenge. I’m pushing to be on the road by 5:00 AM or 6:00 AM tomorrow to make it down to see ‪@stevesrt8‬ , ‪@Nas_Atlas‬ and ‪@CruiserMac‬ at a decent time. The "Ice Maker" Copper Discovery One of the highlights of today was tackling a specialized scrap item I’ve had sitting around for a couple of years: an industrial ice maker. The Process: I spent about 20 to 30 minutes tearing it down to get to the "good stuff". The Payout: While I initially thought the cooling plate was solid copper at 14 lbs, it weighed in at a solid 8.5 lbs. Value: At current scrap metal market rates, that’s a quick $35 for a half-hour of work, plus the additional number 2 copper tubing and steel scrap salvaged from the unit. The Haul Breakdown: Copper, Brass, and Weights I’ve been busy with the scale today, trying to get an approximate weight for the load going into the trunk. Mixed Brass: I have pales of yellow brass coming in around 26 to 29 lbs each. With brass prices reported around $4.49/lb in some areas, this represents a significant portion of the trip's value. Number 2 Copper: I’ve got several bins and pales of number 2 copper, including copper from air conditioners and various plumbing teardowns. One bin alone weighed about 37 lbs (minus the weight of the bin). The Total Load: I’m aiming for a manageable 500-600 lb load in the car to avoid the hassle of a trailer while navigating hotels and "down south" traffic. The Scrapping Community & Road Trip Plan This trip is all about connecting with the community. The Route: Heading down to Steve’s place first, then over to Kelowna to meet up with NAS and Cruiser. The Scrap Hawks: I'm really looking forward to hanging out with the Scrap Hawks and hopefully catching up with Mike. Nice Junk: There's also a plan to try and meet up with Nice Junk on the way back home if the timing works out. Final Prep and "The Supervisors" Even with the rush, I had to make time for the dogs, Banks and River. They got their last run out at the airport this evening to tire them out before the long drive. I still have a few last-minute chores—like trying to get some chicken wire across the fence to keep the dogs out of the neighbor's yard—but I am officially beat and ready for bed.
