Follow us on: Instagram: / the_hobby_musician Twitter: / hobby_musician In this fourth episode of our guitar kit building mini series, we are focusing on the best way to finish and seal the neck. We’ll discuss the various options we have and then get to work by applying the oil and sanding the neck to our desired finish. We’ve mentioned before in this mini series that building a guitar from a kit allows us the opportunity to make many customized choices, all to suit our specific preferences, and the finish on a guitar neck is no exception! Many different companies offer all sorts of different products that can yield necks that have super glossy, “grippy” finishes all the way to satin-smooth, more matte options, that allow the player’s hand to slide up and down the neck with ease. Now don’t get me wrong, there’s no ‘right’ choice when it comes to neck finishes, there are countless players who genuinely prefer one type over another and many times, one player will prefer the exact opposite finish that someone else does. For me, I’ve come to enjoy playing instruments that tend toward the more ‘satin-y’ finish. This often comes with a matte appearance (not very shiny...) and I have just grown to like that combination of looks and feel. So, we will be using Tru Oil, a relatively easy to obtain wood sealing oil that is surprisingly easy to work with. By applying multiple thin coats, then going back over and using very fine steel wool to lightly sand off bumps and imperfections, we’ll be able to take a basic neck from a guitar kit and build up the perfect amount of sealant so that the wood is not only protected from the elements, but also has that perfect look and feel (at least for me...). As always, I hope you’re able to learn something from this episode and play on my friends, play on!! Want to check out the items from this video??
