Although they are called fire extinguishers, you need to understand that fire extinguishers are for fighting the source of a fire. They are only for extinguishing the source or the beginning of a fire. Fire extinguishers are devices for combating the beginning of a fire. They consist of a reservoir that stores extinguishing substances or compounds, effective against certain classes of fire. Extinguishers are part of the mobile system of the fire prevention and fighting system and should be located in strategic, easily accessible, and visible places. Extinguishers are the first line of defense that a civilian firefighter has against a fire; therefore, they must be properly marked and must undergo periodic inspections to ensure their proper functioning. Fire extinguisher signage Civilian firefighters should know that for a fire to start, four basic factors are necessary: ​​fuel; oxidizer*; heat; and chain reaction**, this is known in the literature as the fire tetrahedron. *Oxidizer - these are strongly oxidizing substances. The main example is oxygen. *Chain reaction* - This is a chemical reaction that autonomously generates new reactions until one of the elements of the reaction is extinguished. TYPES OF FIRE EXTINGUISHERS MOST COMMONLY FOUND Pressurized Water Extinguisher (AP) - As the name suggests, the extinguishing substance is water. This fire extinguisher acts by cooling and can only be used to combat incipient fires of class A. This fire extinguisher is basically composed of a valve assembly, pressure gauge, hose, and welded cylinder. Civil firefighters must be careful not to confuse it with a dry chemical powder (PQS). Dry Chemical Powder Extinguisher (PQS) – The PQS extinguishing compound is based on sodium bicarbonate (PQS - Class B and C). Its action is through cooling, smothering, and breaking the chain reaction; its use is recommended for incipient fires of class B and C. This fire extinguisher is quite similar to the pressurized water extinguisher, being basically composed of a valve assembly, pressure gauge, hose, and welded cylinder. There is another type of dry chemical fire extinguisher that can be used for incipient fires of classes A, B, and C, which we will discuss on another occasion. TYPES OF FIRE EXTINGUISHERS CO2 Extinguisher – The extinguishing substance is carbon dioxide (CO₂). It acts by smothering, saturating the air, preventing oxygen from acting as an oxidizer of the fire. This fire extinguisher can be used for incipient fires of classes B and C and is considered a clean fire extinguisher, leaving no residue and not damaging equipment. Regarding its basic composition, this fire extinguisher differs from the previous ones; it does not have a pressure gauge (because it is a high-pressure extinguisher), at the end of the hose it has a diffuser (protects the user from dry ice burns, as the emission of pressurized gas can reach -70°C), and finally, its cylinder is one piece (it has no welds, because it is a high-pressure extinguisher). Civil firefighters must be careful when handling the extinguisher cap. This video will not discuss the ABC type of fire extinguisher. MOST COMMON ERRORS IN THE USE OF FIRE EXTINGUISHERS Civil firefighters must constantly monitor their fire extinguishers to ensure they are in perfect working order in case of an emergency. Are the fire extinguishers in their designated area and accessible to all? Are the fire extinguisher seals intact? Do the fire extinguishers show any physical damage? Is the pressure gauge on the fire extinguishers showing the correct pressure?
