I decided to begin my exploration of Japan on Shikoku Island. It's not the most popular cycling route in Japan; it won't feature Mount Fuji, a deer park, or anything else people usually come to Japan for. Shikoku Island is famous primarily for its pilgrimage route. It's a rare opportunity to glimpse ancient Japan. Here, away from the crowds, you can cycle along ancient samurai trails that wind through mountain passes alongside crystal-clear streams. Riding through historic villages on narrow roads built for horses, where rural houses with gabled roofs stand guard over time, it might seem as if life in these remote valleys stood still for centuries.
