Exploring Elmina, the Oldest City in Africa, Ghana 🇬🇭 |Edina Elmina 🇬🇭 A Brief History of Elmina Elmina, located in Ghana’s Central Region, is one of the oldest European settlements in sub-Saharan Africa. It was founded by the Portuguese in 1482, who built São Jorge da Mina (Elmina Castle) as a trading post for gold, giving the town its name, which means “The Mine” in Portuguese. Over time, Elmina became a major center for trade. While it was initially known for its gold trade, it later became one of the most significant ports in the transatlantic slave trade. In 1637, the Dutch captured Elmina Castle from the Portuguese and continued using it until the British took control in 1872. Today, Elmina is renowned for its rich cultural heritage, vibrant fishing community, and historic landmarks. Elmina Castle is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and stands as a powerful reminder of the town’s complex past. The town is also famous for the annual Edina Bakatue Festival, a traditional celebration that marks the opening of the fishing season and gives thanks for a successful harvest from the sea. hope you enjoy the video.
