Mysterious Elmina Edina Bakatue festival 2026 Celebration The Water Purification Festival, Ghana🇬🇭 The Edina Bakatue Festival is one of Ghana’s oldest and most celebrated traditional festivals, held annually by the people of Elmina (Edina) in the Central Region. The word “Bakatue” means “opening of the lagoon,” symbolizing the official beginning of the fishing season. The festival dates back several centuries and is deeply rooted in the traditions of the people of Edina. It is celebrated to give thanks for a successful year, seek blessings for a prosperous fishing season, and honor the ancestors and deities believed to protect the community. A key part of the celebration is the purification of the Benya Lagoon, which is considered sacred to the people of Elmina. The festivities feature colorful processions, traditional drumming and dancing, canoe regattas, cultural performances, and the gathering of chiefs and community members dressed in vibrant traditional attire. Today, the Edina Bakatue Festival is not only a significant cultural and spiritual event but also a major tourist attraction that showcases the rich heritage and traditions of Ghana.
