Iran is a Guardianship of the Islamic Jurist and Islamic republic in which the president, parliament and judicial system share powers reserved to the national government, according to its Constitution. The history of Iran, which was commonly known until the mid-20th century as Persia in the Western world, is intertwined with the history of a larger region, also to an extent known as Greater Iran, The Guardian Council is an appointed and constitutionally mandated 12-member council that wields considerable power and influence in the Islamic Republic of Iran In its history, the Islamic Republic of Iran only has had two Supreme Leaders: Ruhollah Khomeini, who held the position from 1979 until his death in 1989, and Ali Khamenei, who has held the position since Khomeini's death. In theory, the Supreme Leader is elected and overseen by the Assembly of Experts.
