On January 2, 1492, the keys of Granada were handed over, and with them ended nearly 800 years of Muslim rule in Spain. But what followed was far darker than a political defeat. Entire communities vanished. Mosques became churches. Libraries burned. A people were forced to abandon their faith, their language and even their names. In this documentary, we trace the full journey of Al-Andalus — from Tariq bin Ziyad’s landing in 711, to the breathtaking Golden Age of Cordoba, from the rise of Abdur Rahman I (The Falcon of Quraish), to the moral collapse of the Party Kings (Muluk al-Tawaif), and finally, the siege and fall of Granada. We also explore the great mystery: Why did Islam disappear completely from Spain while it survived in India despite the loss of Muslim rule? We also uncover one of history’s most chilling chapters: the Moriscos, forced conversions, the Spanish Inquisition and what may be considered one of the earliest examples of systematic religious cleansing in Europe.
