Joaquín Torres García, a 150 años de su nacimiento
Last Sunday marked the 150th anniversary of the birth of Joaquín Torres García, perhaps the most influential Uruguayan visual artist in history. As an example, Enrique Aguerre, director of the National Museum of Visual Arts, told the newspaper El Observador: “The only Uruguayan artist included in the universal canon of modern Western art is Joaquín Torres García.” His teaching was fundamental, particularly with the Escuela del Sur (School of the South), later renamed the Taller Torres García (Torres García Workshop), which trained figures such as José Gurvich and continued its work after its founder's death in 1949. The school's name held a political significance: “I said Escuela del Sur because, in reality, our north is the South,” wrote Torres García, who symbolized this concept in his famous drawing, Inverted America. But above all, Torres is remembered for creating his own movement, Constructive Universalism: instantly recognizable, it is the national version of the avant-garde movements that shook the visual arts in the first half of the 20th century.
