Behind him, in the warmest and most extraordinary room Wren had ever seen — curved wooden walls, firelight, shelves of carved figures in every shape imaginable, a stump table with tea and a plate of cookies — sat an old man who looked entirely unsurprised to see her. His name was Edric. He handed her a mug without asking if she wanted one. She sat down. Cloud the dog settled immediately at her feet as if they were old friends. Outside the snow fell soft and steady. Inside the fire crackled and the shadows moved gently across a hundred small carved faces watching from the shelves. "How did you know about my owl?" Wren asked. Edric smiled. "I walk in the forest every evening. I see more than people think." They sat together for a long time. He told her the name of every animal he had ever carved and why. She told him about the owl and the exact colour of its eyes. When it was time to go he walked her to the edge of the forest himself, Cloud trotting ahead through the snow. At the treeline Wren turned and looked back at the great oak, its round window glowing warm and gold between the dark pines. "Will you be here next winter?" she asked. "I'll be here," Edric said. She came back the following December with her mother's permission and a jar of homemade jam. Cloud was already at the door before she knocked. Edric had tea ready.
