He lit a candle, poured water into a mug, and sat on the edge of the bed, listening to the snow striking the windows. Outside the night was restless, but inside everything was slowly settling. Sometimes stops like this feel like lost time. But it is exactly in moments like these that a rare feeling appears — as if the world lets go of you for a while. There is no need to go anywhere, to answer anyone, to decide anything. There is only warm light, the crackling of fire, and the sense of shelter that cannot be planned in advance. He lay down, wrapped himself in a thick blanket, and watched the shadows from the fire slowly move along the wooden walls. At some point it became clear: if the ferry had run on schedule, this night simply would not have existed. There would have been no silence, no calm, no feeling that you are exactly where you are meant to be. Outside, the blizzard continued its conversation with the night. And the van stood still, like a small island of warmth waiting out the storm. And sometimes that is enough — to stop, to wait, and to let the night do its work."
