★ 4K 🇩🇪 Karlsruhe Gbf - 🇨🇭 Basel RB cab ride via Durmersheim - Freiburg Gbf, Germany [06.2024]

We're going on our first long journey through Germany in this video, on the Rhine valley railway, a very important freight route, for traffic between Rotterdam in the Netherlands and Genua in Italy. It's also the mainline for passengers travelling out of Switzerland in into Germany, with direct ICE connections between Chur and Interlaken in Switzerland to Hamburg and Berlin. Unfortunately, when we think of Germany and railways, the first thing that comes to mind is delays. Their network is quite outdated and lacking in many areas due to under investment. For many this is an inconvenience as it leads to delays, cancellations and temporary line closures when maintenance finally is done. I see it in a more positive light. Sure, it takes longer to get from A to B with a freight train - but certain parts of the network are like driving through a museum. Many stations we pass through are still operated locally, with some signal boxes dating back to the 19th century. Personally I'm a big fan of mechanical signals, which predate the world wars. We'll be passing through the last station on the line that still has them here - Durmersheim, with one of its signal boxes dating back to 1905. To date, this is the video with the most additional information I've ever made. I've done lots of research and made quite a few interesting discoveries that I love to share with you all. From bridges destroyed during World war II to lines connecting former German territories that are now French all the way to the fact that this line was originally constructed at 1600 mm wide gauge. We'll be talking about traffic, changes to the line in the past and the future, the train control system and much more.
