The General Who Led the Fight in Helmand | Living the Dream

In 2009, Brigadier General Lawrence Nicholson led Task Force Leatherneck during Operation Khanjar, one of the largest Marine Corps operations of the Afghanistan War. Filmed at the National Museum of the Marine Corps, this conversation is part of the ongoing journey to make Living the Dream. General Nicholson reflects on planning the campaign, the fighting that followed, and the tremendous cost of twelve months of combat in Helmand Province, where 93 Marines under his command were killed in action. Among them was my friend, Corporal Nicholas G. Xiarhos, who was killed in action on July 23, 2009, while serving with 2nd Battalion, 8th Marines. This interview provides important historical context for Living the Dream while exploring leadership, sacrifice, and what it truly means to be a United States Marine.
