The Speech Every Veteran Needs to Hear | Jon "Q" Quiceno
Every year, thousands of people gather on Cape Cod for Big Nick's Ride for the Fallen to honor the life and legacy of Corporal Nicholas G. Xiarhos, who was killed in action in Afghanistan on July 23, 2009. This year, one of Nick's closest friends and fellow Marines, Jon "Q" Quiceno, was asked to deliver the keynote address. Q and Nick served together in both Iraq and Afghanistan. They became brothers, and seventeen years later, Q stood in front of hundreds of people to tell everyone who Nick really was—not just the Marine who was killed in action, but the man who made people laugh, made impossible days feel possible, and somehow always left people better than he found them. After the speech, Q shared something that really stuck with me: "The pain isn't gone. I still miss my brother. But now, I don't feel like I'm carrying him alone. A little piece of Nick now lives in the hearts of people who never met him." That perfectly captures why I'm making Living the Dream. I've never set out to make a documentary about the Afghanistan War. I'm telling the story of a generation of young men who went to war, the friendships they built, the sacrifices they made, and what those experiences have meant over the years that followed. I'm grateful Q shared his story with the world and his words will change lives. I hope you take the time to watch it.
