Phil Smith: A Torn Achilles Ruined the Career of This Future Superstar

Phil Smith was one of the most talented players of the 70s, but he is unfortunately forgotten to time. There were really no weaknesses to his game, as he could shoot from the outside while also being skilled in the post, hitting the turnaround jumper with ease. He was an ambidextrous finisher and he loved to play above the rim. He was a great passer, plus his quick hands helped him on the defensive end. After starring at San Francisco, he was drafted by the Warriors, assuming a bench role on their title team in 1975. He got a huge opportunity in his 2nd year and he blossomed, even making the 2nd Team All-NBA. Phil looked like Golden State’s next franchise player after Rick Barry, but an Achilles tear in 1979 would ruin a potential Hall of Fame career. And just like that, someone with so much potential so early on was now just another story of “what if” and “what could’ve been”. But today’s video will shed light on his short but promising time in the pros. https://www.basketball-reference.com/...
