The Tragic Story of Australia's Most Trusted Boats Giant: Savage Boats

The Tragic Story of Australia's Most Trusted Boats Giant: Savage Boats In 1978, one in four Australian boats wore the Savage name. Savage Boats wasn't just a manufacturer, it was the Australian weekend, where the FJ Holden met the welded aluminium tinny. 7,500 boats, one Williamstown gate. But in February 2008, John Savage broke ranks. The third-generation owner called Brunswick "a marketing company that hasn't got the skills required for manufacturing here." Months later, Italian, Greek, and Maltese welders got Christmas layoff letters. The press fell silent. Today, Nelson Place is a marina, the Savage sheds standing empty behind it. This is the story of how Brunswick kept the badge, and what an empty slipway says about a country that didn't keep what it built. This is not just the story of Savage Boats. It's the story of a country that kept the badge and lost the bench. #SavageBoats #JJSavageAndSons #AbandonedFactories #LostFactories #IndustrialDecline #AustralianManufacturing
