How A 1,000-Year-Old Secret Is Making Water In The Sahara A thousand-year-old way of making water is now running in the Sahara. No pumps. No electricity. Just fog, mesh, and gravity. It started on El Hierro, where the Bimbache people drank fog caught by a single tree until a storm tore it out in 1610. It failed again on a mountain in Chile in the 1990s. Then a German designer rebuilt it in steel, and on the edge of the Sahara in Morocco, the nets finally held. 16 Berber villages now get water piped down 500 meters of drop, no power needed.
