Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome with Dr. Joy Degruy 2020
Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome with Dr. Joy Degruy | Black Social Work Podcast You may have seen Dr. Joy Degruy in the viral video from AJ+. I will include the video in the description. But those of us who have been following the work of Dr. Joy Degruy understand that she has spend many years laying the foundation to enhance our understanding around the collective trauma that we face as African Americans. On this episode of The Afrocentric Social Worker Podcast I talk with nationally and internationally recognized author, researcher and fellow Social Worker, Dr. Joy Degruy as she discusses her work and book Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome: America's Legacy of Enduring Injury and Healing. I've been talking to a lot of you about the way forward for the black community in the wake of the pandemic, and our continuous trauma of either hearing about or watching the death of black people on TV. Many of you were not familiar with the work of Dr. Joy Degruy or had not been introduced to her research from Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome, in your undergrad nor your graduate level Social Work programs. This is problematic because we can't fix something that we don't understand. If we don't have an appropriate Afrocentric orientation toward our problems, we will continue to use Eurocentric models to fix them. _____________________________________________________________________ Links Mentioned in the Video: Listen to Full Interview https://www.manickathomas.com/004 FREE TRAINING How to map out your Social Work career, EVEN if you don't know where to start https://www.manickathomas.com/designy...
