Workplace Mobbing & Institutional Betrayal | Dr. Heliana Ramirez

What happens when the social worker becomes the target? Dr. Heliana Ramirez was mobbed out of her position at Veterans Affairs after 13 years—for refusing to break laws and speaking up on behalf of people being harmed. What she learned from that experience became the foundation of her research on institutional betrayal. Recorded as episode 34 of the Revolutionary Social Work Podcast with host Alicia and co-host Causha Spellman-Timmons, this episode brings Dr. Ramirez's framework to workplace trauma, neuroscience of racial and LGBTQ trauma, and culturally responsive suicide prevention. She explains why the same brain region that registers physical pain also registers social exile—and why that makes workplace mobbing so dangerous. She names the 67.5% statistic from the Workplace Bullying Institute: that two-thirds of workplace abuse targets had prior interpersonal trauma. She also offers a searing critique of the current crisis intervention system. We discuss: Workplace mobbing: how impostor leaders target ethical, high-performing employees and weaponize HR The neuroscience of institutional betrayal: why social exile activates the same brain region as physical pain Why 67.5% of workplace abuse targets have prior interpersonal trauma, and what that means for social workers Culturally responsive suicide prevention: harm reduction approaches versus 911, 988, and ERs The cases of Dr. Antoinette Candia-Bailey and Dr. Nikita Mortimer—deaths by bullycide What to do instead of calling 911 when someone is in suicidal crisis: co-regulation, safety plans, respite centers Subscribe:    / @revolutionarysocialwork   Website: RevolutionarySocialWork.com Connect / collaborate: [email protected] Guest Links Website: https://www.workplacetraumarecovery.com/ Provider page: https://care.headway.co/providers/hel... About Heliana Ramirez, PhD, LISW Heliana Ramirez is a clinical social worker and researcher focused on the trauma of toxic workplaces, including workplace racism and anti-LGBTQ bias. During her own recovery from a toxic workplace, she recognized how unprepared many mental health providers are to address the specific injuries of workplace abuse and institutional betrayal. Drawing on post-traumatic growth and peer support, she developed communal resources to reduce isolation and strengthen recovery, including culturally informed somatic interventions, career-protection tools, a self-help workbook, blog posts, and on-demand webinars for survivors and the clinicians and advocates who support them. Her work spans anti-racist and LGBTQ+ affirming workforce wellness, occupational psychosocial safety, culturally responsive suicide prevention, somatic trauma therapy, harm reduction, and liberatory community building.
