In addition, we also have pharyngeal, tubal, and lingual tonsils, which, together with the palatine tonsils, form the so-called Waldeyer's or lymphatic ring. All of these tonsils together are an important part of our immune system and represent the first line of defense against pathogens attempting to enter the upper respiratory tract. When we open our mouths wide, our palatine tonsils are partially visible. They consist of lymphatic tissue, are approximately 1-2 cm in size, and are traversed by so-called crypts. These are slit-like depressions that give the tonsils a "jagged" appearance. These slits contain food debris and bacteria, which are usually dealt with by the lymphocytes, which are white blood cells, in the tonsils. The slits are emptied at regular intervals so that new bacteria can settle there and the immune system can learn from them. These "empties" sometimes manifest as a whitish coating on the tonsils, and one often thinks: These are signs of tonsillitis! But that's not the case, as there are no other symptoms. What is tonsillitis? Inflammation of the palatine tonsils, also known as acute tonsillitis or acute tonsillitis, particularly affects children and young adults and often occurs in combination with inflammation of the throat. Strictly speaking, tonsillitis occurs when the inflammation of the tonsils goes beyond the physiological level. Schoolchildren are most commonly affected, but any age group can develop tonsillitis. There is currently no exact data on the incidence, but in 2010, for example, 127,000 tonsillectomies or partial removals were performed across Germany. In 70–95% of cases, the disease is triggered by viruses, often in conjunction with a cold. Many different viruses can cause tonsil infections, and depending on which virus triggers the infection, the course can vary. While rhinoviruses, for example, are expected to be mild, adenoviruses cause severe tonsillitis with purulent deposits.
