How to Tune an Akerworks Kantele

NOTE! I've made an error in recording this: I've said (because this tuner webpage with which I'm no longer quite so enamored has told me to) that we're tuning, for D-major (see below) from D3 to A3. This is incorrect: it's higher, from D4 to A4. Oops! I'll remake the video soon. Here’s a discussion of tuning a kantele. Everything here is also relevant, though, to tuning any instrument that uses “zither pins” to manage the pitch of each string. Examples are such instruments as harps, autoharps, zithers, and other “Baltic psalteries,” which is the category of instrument to which the Finnish kantele belongs. The tuning wrench I’m using is of the sort you can easily find at various musical instrument suppliers or, if necessary, through Amazon by searching “Golden Gate DH-40 T-Shaped Tuning Hammer.” D-major tuning: D4 - E4 - F#4 - G4 - A4 D-minor tuning: D4 - E4 - F4 - G4 - A4 (just one half step different) D-major-pentatonic tuning: D4 - E4 - F#4 - A4 - B4 D-minor-pentatonic tuning: D4 - F4 - G4 - A4 - C5
