Waterfalls on the land after a wild few days of rain | Life on Patchwork Farm
50 millimetres of rain overnight, our creek turned into a roaring river, brand-new waterfalls across the land, and a wedge-tailed eagle overhead. This week, we installed a weather station on Patchwork Farm, and its timing turns out to be remarkable. Over the last few episodes, we've talked a lot about how much the weather rules life out here, but we'd never really been able to trust what the forecasts told us. So in this video, we're fixing that. The nearest official weather station sits around 50km away, in a completely different climate zone. The forecasts we'd been relying on were often out by 5 degrees. And on the nights it mattered most, we'd wake to frost our forecast didn't mention. So we set up our own Davis Vantage Vue weather station to finally understand how the weather actually behaves on our land. We didn't have to wait long. The next night, the forecast called for 10–20mm of rain. But we recorded more than 50mm. By morning, the usually dry creek had become a wild, roaring river, and waterfalls we'd never seen were tumbling across the property. We're still learning how this land holds water, and how the seasons move across it. If you run your own weather station out where you live, we'd love to know. What's the biggest gap you've seen between the forecast and what actually landed on your place? Pop a note in the comments. It's always lovely to hear from you. #homestead #countrylife #australia #selfsufficient #simpleliving #regionalvictoria #homesteadlife #goldfields #bushland #weatherstation #creek #wedgetailedeagle #rain #patchworkfarm
