"The ancient ritual of the Admission to Fellowship ceremony in the college chapel - with its Latin incantations, kneelings and clasping of hands - introduces Jane Bewick , a new young research fellow, to the strange and varied life of the Cambridge don. One of her more worldly new colleagues is Sir James Beament, Professor of Agriculture, insect-lover and inventor of a revolutionary solution for preserving fruit. But perhaps the most bizarre job goes to Dr James Diggle , the University Orator, who has to make speeches in Latin at the impressive and colourful Honorary Degree ceremony.
