I traveled between the mountains of Cortés and Santa Bárbara. Subtropical coniferous forests, also known as pine forests, constitute a terrestrial forest biome found in highland and lowland areas with a semi-humid subtropical climate, a long dry season, and scarce rainfall. The predominant vegetation consists of pine and mixed forests (conifers and broadleaf trees). The ecosystems that make up this biome are dense forests with an understory of fungi, ferns, shrubs, and small trees. Migratory birds and butterflies are prominent. In drier areas, there is thorny scrub and succulent plants. The pine forests of Honduras cover 22.3% of the country's total area. 52% are located in the central region, 19% in the eastern region, and 14% in the western region. The vegetation of northern Honduras consists primarily of tropical rainforests, coastal mangroves, and cloud forests in the higher elevations, notable for its wide variety of broadleaf plants. Common Plants: Timber trees: Mahogany, royal cedar, and cedar. Epiphytes: Orchids and bromeliads that grow on tree trunks. Ferns and mosses: Very abundant in humid, cool mountain areas.
