At low tide, the passage to the mainland reappeared on the tidal flats. A few hours later, the water covered the ground again, the channels reformed, and Mont-Saint-Michel became almost inaccessible once more. For the men imprisoned in the abbey, the prison didn't end at the gates: the bay extended beyond the walls. In 1793, at the height of the French Revolution, the monks left the abbey, and the entire monument was repurposed as a prison. Its steep staircases, vaulted halls, ramparts, and natural isolation made it a particularly difficult place to escape. Over the decades, the sanctuary became the infamous "Bastille of the Seas," housing political prisoners, religious figures, and then common criminals. Inside, the former monastic spaces were repurposed. The cloister became a guarded courtyard, some rooms were converted into dormitories or workshops, and a huge wheel was installed to hoist supplies to the upper levels of the abbey. Men walk inside the mechanism, advancing without ever leaving the same place. This story reveals a striking contradiction: the use of Mont-Saint-Michel as a prison helped keep its buildings standing, while profoundly altering their original purpose.
