L’Année est 1903 : À Paris, 84 Voyageurs Ne Sont Jamais Ressortis du Métro
On August 10, 1903, an electrical incident on Line 2 North transformed the fledgling Paris Métro into a space almost impossible to comprehend. While a wooden train burned in the Ménilmontant area, black smoke billowed through the tunnels and reached Couronnes station, where passengers had just been evacuated. The station itself was not destroyed. The platform, corridors, and staircase leading to the street were still standing. Yet, when the lights went out and the smoke obscured the walls, signs, and entrances, the exit, located just a few meters away, became nearly impossible to find. Most of the victims were not in the burning train: they were trapped in the darkness, asphyxiated by the smoke and disoriented of a network still unable to maintain its essential functions during a disaster. This episode of The Dark Year recounts the 1903 Paris metro fire, the chain of decisions made between Barbès, Ménilmontant, and Couronnes stations, the weaknesses of the CMP's first wooden carriages, and the subsequent transformations: metal equipment, independent electrical sectors, emergency lighting, enhanced signaling, and new fire and smoke protection systems. Subscribe to The Dark Year to discover the events that transformed France, right down to its streets, monuments, and infrastructure. In your opinion, in an underground disaster, what protects passengers most quickly: technology or clear instructions? #Couronnes1903 #ParisMetro #HistoryOfParis #HistoricalDisaster #TheDarkYear
