According to classical mythology, Prometheus was a Titan, son of Iapetus and the Oceanid Asia. Of his siblings, Prometheus was the most cunning and courageous of all, so bold that he dared to challenge the gods of Olympus themselves. After the Titanomachy, the war between gods and Titans, Zeus wanted to populate the world he would reign over with living beings and entrusted this task to Prometheus and his brother Epimetheus. The latter was responsible for creating all animals and granting them properties that helped them survive, such as fur to protect them from the cold, claws for hunting, speed, and great strength. For his part, Prometheus used clay to create more delicate and complex beings that almost resembled the gods: humans. The Titan granted them great intelligence and extraordinary abilities such as walking upright, building tools and shelters, domesticating wild animals, and gathering food from nature. Prometheus was delighted with his new creation, and men worshipped him for giving them life, but for the Titan, it wasn't enough. In a moment of recklessness, and perhaps wishing for the good of humanity or to annoy the gods, Prometheus stole a spark from the chariot of Helios, god of the sun, and gave it to men so they could use fire at will and be more equal to the gods.
